Performance Systems Development (PSD) was founded in Ithaca, New York, in 1998. Since then, it has been at the forefront of the energy efficiency industry, developing and delivering integrated solutions in support of successful energy efficiency programs.
PSD’s Influence on the industry:
- 2001: PSD and Taitem Engineering release TREAT, an award-winning, Department of Energy (DOE)-approved energy modeling and home energy audit software. PSD was responsible for the software design; Taitem Engineering provided the programming.
- TREAT’s integration of fuel usage data with modeling data results led to the BPI 2400 energy modeling standard referenced in the IRA. The standard was initiated by PSD.
- 2002: PSD builds OTTER, a precursor to our enterprise tracking platform Compass, for NHSaves.
- OTTER was built to automate standardized XML submissions from the TREAT modeling tool into a central database.
- The XML export from TREAT became the foundation for the PSD-initiated national HPXML data standard. HPXML is a technology-neutral open data standard that streamlines terms and data transfers for residential energy efficiency, home performance, and building characteristics.
- 2008: PSD becomes a RESNET-accredited HERS Rating Provider, responsible for certifying raters and providing quality assurance. Today, PSD oversees 167 raters in 9 states.
- 2010: PSD implements its inaugural utility program for FirstEnergy’s Pennsylvania operating companies. This residential new construction program is now in its sixteenth year of consecutive implementation; PSD now supports every new home program in the Keystone state.
- 2011: PSD begins delivering rater training for the Northeast Home Energy Rating System Alliance, providing classroom and field training to hundreds of raters. PSD is now the exclusive training provider for NEHERS.
- 2015: PSD begins supporting energy code officials in Pennsylvania with training specifically targeting challenges posed by advancing energy codes. PSD now provides energy codes support to Mass Save, NYSERDA, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. PSD has broadened its code support to include stretch code modeling for the state of Massachusetts, and a residential energy codes field study for the USDOE.
- 2020: PSD designs the Comfort Home Program working with NYSERDA. Regulatory-approved savings calculations for Comfort Home are provided by a transparent, forms-based approach to simplified energy modeling, Standardized Simulations.
- Standardized Simulations were incorporated into the New York Technical Resource Manual (TRM) in 2021.
- 2022: DOE awards PSD a Better Buildings Innovations award for the use of EnergyPlus-based regulatory-approved savings calculations using HPXML.
- DOE expands support for PSD’s EnergyPlus tool development with three rounds of Small Business Innovation Research funding.
- PSD has been a contributor to national organizations and standards development for over 20 years, serving on or leading the boards of Affordable Comfort, Efficiency First, the Northeast HERS Alliance, the Energy Efficiency Alliance, ASHRAE, IBPSA-USA, and RESNET.
